ECE Teacher – Trauma-Informed Practice (Fixed Term)

We are looking for a compassionate and motivated Early Childhood Education (ECE) Teacher, or a new graduate, to join our team at St Mary’s Preschool in Ōtāhuhu. This is a fixed-term role (30 hours per week) for 6 months.

About the Role
As part of our team, you will work directly with tamariki and whānau to support learning and development in a trauma-informed way.
Children impacted by trauma require educators who can recognise their needs, respond with empathy and structure, and foster strong connections. You will have the opportunity to implement the Te Whāriki curriculum, work closely with your fellow Kaiako, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children and families you support.
This 6-month, fixed-term role offers a supportive and welcoming environment where you can grow professionally and personally while contributing to the wellbeing of our community.
What We’re Looking For
To succeed in this role, you will need to:

Hold an early childhood teaching qualification recognised by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

Hold a current Education Council Practising Certificate

Understand trauma’s impact on early brain development and behaviour

Be familiar with the Te Whāriki curriculum

Establish authentic and respectful relationships with tamariki, whānau, and Kaiako
-
Engage effectively with tamariki, whānau, and colleagues
-
Demonstrate skills in co-regulation, emotional attunement, and responsive caregiving
-
Commit to equity, inclusion, and creating a sense of belonging
-
Deliver high-quality teaching and learning and be willing to go the extra mile
-
Be fluent in English (basic knowledge of te reo Māori or a Pacific Island language beneficial)

Design, implement, and document children’s learning to a high standard

Create routines and environments that promote safety and predictability

Be creative, innovative, and reflective

Show initiative, a sense of humour, and strong team commitment

Be physically fit, flexible, and able to adapt to tamariki and preschool needs

Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence

Be legally entitled to work in New Zealand
