Nurture Tamariki | Support Kaiako | Build Community

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Lead Teacher to join ATWC’s St Mary’s Preschool in Otahuhu. This permanent part-time role (30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am–3pm) provides an opportunity to work with babies and tamariki in a trauma-informed way, supporting their development, wellbeing, and learning.

You will play a pivotal role in guiding, mentoring, and supporting a team of kaiako while ensuring high-quality, authentic curriculum planning and assessments for each child.

About the Role

As Lead Teacher at St Mary’s Preschool, you will:

  • Provide day-to-day guidance, induction, and mentoring for kaiako
  • Support the Preschool Manager in achieving strategic and operational objectives
  • Develop and implement high-quality curriculum and individual learning plans for tamariki
  • Establish authentic and respectful relationships with tamariki, whānau, and kaiako
  • Use trauma-informed practices to support children’s emotional wellbeing, co-regulation, and development
  • Maintain a safe, predictable, and engaging learning environment
  • Be creative, innovative, reflective, and flexible to meet the needs of children and the preschool
  • Demonstrate initiative, humour, and a commitment to the team and the ATWC kaupapa

What We’re Looking For

You will bring:

  • Early Childhood teaching qualification recognised by the Education Council of Aotearoa NZ
  • Current Education Council Practising Certificate
  • Understanding of trauma’s impact on early brain development and behaviour
  • Ability to guide, mentor, and support a team of kaiako
  • Skills in co-regulation, emotional attunement, and responsive caregiving
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating a sense of belonging
  • Fluency in English; basic knowledge of Te Reo Māori or a Pacific language is beneficial
  • Full NZ Driver’s Licence
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching and learning
