Youth Worker in Secondary Schools (YWiSS) | Part-Time 

Strengthen Tamariki | Support Whānau | Champion Educational Success

Working as part of the YWiSS team based at ATWC, Otahuhu the mentor will assist youth to make conscious decisions to engage with their school community and address their wellbeing and achievement needs. This may involve working with hapu or extended family.

Each mentor will manage a caseload of youth, and work in collaboration with schools and the youth in recognising and developing their strengths, resources, resiliency, and problem-solving abilities, to increase social, educational and health outcomes. They will utilise a strength based multi-systemic approach which aligns with current legislation and will focus on problem solving, skill building and competence enhancement.

About the Role

As a Youth Worker in Secondary Schools, you will:

  • Work in partnership with rangatahi to develop individualised goals with clear review timeframes

  • Create focused plans to strengthen engagement with school and learning

  • Support young people to navigate school by understanding their interests, strengths, needs, and educational progress

  • Collaborate with school personnel and whānau to build effective family–school relationships that support re-engagement

  • Utilise the Check & Connect model to track and monitor levels of engagement

  • Apply strategies consistent with strengths-based practice principles

  • Develop supportive and effective working relationships with rangatahi and key community organisations

  • Identify and utilise appropriate resources to assist young people

  • Implement effective and timely interventions

  • Refer to external agencies where appropriate

  • Maintain accurate documentation and professional records.


What We’re Looking For:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Youth Work, or a related field, or equivalent experience

  • Proven experience working with young people

  • Strong understanding of working with Pacific, Māori, and new immigrant students and families

  • Sound developmental knowledge of young people, particularly in relation to mental health

  • Full, clean NZ Driver Licence

  • Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand

  • Fluency in or understanding of a second language is desirable

Skills and Experience

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to establish rapport and build trust with rangatahi, whānau, colleagues, and professionals

  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong report writing capability

  • Creative thinking and effective problem-solving ability

  • Ability to develop high-quality relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

  • Initiative and sound decision-making ability

  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail

  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a wider multidisciplinary team
